He got out safely, but “a part of me will always be in that stairwell trying to get out,” Hoffe told former NewsChannel 8 reporter Jackie Barron.

Barrron was with President George W. Bush at Sarasota’s Booker Elementary when he got the news of the attacks.

Hoffe and Barron are among several people who will share their 9/11 stories at USF Sarasota-Manatee on Sept. 7.

The event, “Triumph over Tragedy: Remembering 9/11 a Decade Later,” starts at 4 p.m. at the Selby Auditorium on campus, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. USFSM’s Institute for Public Policy and Leadership is the sponsor.

It’s open to the public but please RSVP at (941) 359-4602, because seating is limited.

On the Tampa campus, USF will honor those who died on 9/11 and those who responded with a ceremony on Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Oval Theater in the Marshall Student Center.

Former U.S. Representative Jim Davis and USF President Judy Genshaft will speak. The public is invited.
