Operation Medicine Cabinet

I received informtion today in response to a recent 4You column on proper disposal of expired prescription medications. You’re no longer advised to flush old medicines down the toilet. Instead, so called pill drop events sponsored by local law enforcement agencies provide the safest disposal. There’s one coming up in Tampa called Operation Medicine Cabinet, sponsored by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. It will be held at WAL-MART at North Dale Mabry and Waters, Friday, June 27, 2008 from 7:30 am-12:30 pm.

Some of you have asked about donating medications that may have belonged to a person who has passed away. Unfortunately, if a drug has been prescribed to another person, it can’t be used legally by anyone else. So medical clinics for the poor and uninsured can’t accept them.  Unopened professional medication samples can, however, be accepted, as long as they are not expired.
