Just saw the story linked off The Drudge Report about Manhattanites reporting to police about an alarming odor wafting through the city.
What did it smell like?
Pancakes. Waffles. Syrup.
Police were alerted. So were firefighters. Even the EPA investigated.
The source was not found.
My favorite part of the story:
We are continuing to sample the air throughout the affected area to make sure there’s nothing hazardous,” said Jarrod Bernstein, an emergency management spokesman. “What the actual cause of the smell is, we really don’t know.”
Although many compared the smell to maple syrup, others said it reminded them of vanilla coffee or freshly-baked cake. All seemed to agree that it was a welcome change from the usual city smells.
“It’s like maple syrup. With Eggos (waffles). Or pancakes,” Arturo Padilla told The New York Times as he walked in Lower Manhattan. “It’s pleasant.”
Only in New York could the sweet smell of a warm breakfast interrupting the usual odors of urine and exhaust be a sign of possible danger.

Just dropped in via Side Salad. Wonder what NYC smells like today? This could be an on-going report, maybe--or not. And as for the wine cooler PR flack, you don’t suppose she really meant “bare” do you?

Cities with a food smell? There’s a new one. After a moment, this post brought back a good memory for me. I grew up in South Miami, where Holsom Bakeries was located. Every once in a while, I’d wake up to the smell of bread baking....the winds carried it all over town. Man, I miss that scent. My house was about a mile from the bakery. MMmmm
This is off topic, but would you consider pointing your readers to the best Cuban sandwich in Tampa Bay? Hopefully it’s in Pinellas so I won’t have that far to drive.
