Penny’s a Nurture And Hold (NAH): Nah, I won’t pull that out yet, it’s still got a green shoot. She likes dragonflies, lady bugs and new stuff only after weeding, pruning and fertilizing.
Kim’s a Want It Now (WIN): Everything pretty, everything now. She will resort to full-spectrum insecticides in desperate situations, and believes it’s her duty and right to buy new plants every weekend.
Both advocate Plant Choice (SOMEthing besides crotons. Please!), lots of color and low maintenance. We don’t agree on everything, but we’re smart enough to learn from each other - and from you.

Finding that special plant can be one of the biggest, and most frustrating, challenges for us Bay area gardeners, which is why we love big plant fairs.
But here it is almost fall, which always makes us want to dig, and there are no big fairs on the horizon. That means vendor George Griepenburg and his able assistant Cindy Deloy have some spare time for one of their in-between sales.
From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, they’ll sell plants from Cindy’s yard at 801 W. Country Club Drive, Tampa (click for a map.)
At top is a blue butterfly clerodendrum, one of the first plants I bought from George and one of my favorite shrubs. They’ll have some at the sale this weekend. Below is red firespike, which they’ll also have. Cindy says they’re just starting to bloom.

They’ll have about 350 plants, most in 3-gallon pots and selling for $10 to $20. George and Cindy will both be at the sale, and they can tell you everything you want to know about any of their plants.
George does his growing in Dade City, propagating plants from cuttings and seeds he and Cindy find in their travels around the state. Many of the plants are old-fashioned, hardy favorites that are hard to find in nurseries. Some are unusual specimens. All of them George experiments with to ensure they’ll grow well here before he sells them.
This weekend’s sale will include lots of butterfly and hummingbird plants, Cindy says. Among the more unusual varieties: swamp hibiscus, variegated jasmine, lots of honeysuckles, vitex, and several varieties of cassia (or cassia-like) trees, including necklace pod, Bahama, and candlestick (this photo is Kim’s candlestick, which is blooming now.)

Thanks to FOD Pumpkin for the heads-up on the sale. That woman has a nose for plant sales if ever I saw one, so I’m glad we’re on the same team!

Great tip on George and Cindy’s plant sale. I’ve been to at least two previous ones and gotten among other things - lions tail, blackberry iris, walking iris and a pretty fall bloomer that I can’t remember the name of. Their plants have been beautiful and Florida friendly! At the last sale, Penny got a Japanese honeysuckle that I regretted not buying. Now I have a cutting from hers that is growing and thriving. (Thanks!)
Nice candlestick, Kim!

I can not put in words how much fun the plant sell was. About 75% of them I have never seen before. I have already started cutting of the musical notes. One for Penny and who ever else wants one just let me know. Some of the plants I got are Orange Chinese Hat Plant, Variegated Phillipine Violet,Musical Notes, and a Candlestick Cassia for the school. Fall is on its way it my garden. Pumpkin

Oh It just kills me to have missed a one of Cindy’s sales! We had a busy weekend. Diane and I went to a chicken seminar, this is old hat for Diane growing up on a farm but everything I know about chickens comes from the colonel [fried or baked]. So now I have a lot better Idea of what to build. Full moon this comming thursday so a bunch of seedlings are going to get planted. All I need is a good rain after I plant. Looks like everyone got some nice plants from Cindy I just hope I do not miss the next one…“Chip”
