I got a wonderful surprise in my work mailbox today: the DVD release of season one of “Thirtysomething.” (I can hear you dudes groaning, you know)
I was 27 when the show debuted in 1987 (for those doing the math, I’ll be 49 this year), and this was my fave show. It was the series the women at work bonded over the morning after. It was my generation’s “Grey’s Anatomy” only a zillion times better. “Why does Michael stay married to Hope?” “Isn’t Peter Horton dreamy?” “I could just smack Elliott.”
We lived the trials and tribulations of a group of working class people living in Philadelphia. The love life failures, parenting issues and work-place drama. Frankly, it sounds as if things haven’t changed much.
About 10 years ago, I put my name on a list at Amazon.com to make sure I’d be notified when it came out on DVD. TEN YEARS AGO. Why so long? Rumor has it, it took that long to get all the music rights. That’s a good reason. Music is central to most series produced by Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz. Can you image “My So Called Life” without the music?
I"m going to enjoy my birthday weekend with Michael, Gary, Ellyn, Melissa and Nancy. And the Hope Hate will commence again - 22 years later.
I can’t wait.
