Penny’s a Nurture And Hold (NAH): Nah, I won’t pull that out yet, it’s still got a green shoot. She likes dragonflies, lady bugs and new stuff only after weeding, pruning and fertilizing.
Kim’s a Want It Now (WIN): Everything pretty, everything now. She will resort to full-spectrum insecticides in desperate situations, and believes it’s her duty and right to buy new plants every weekend.
Both advocate Plant Choice (SOMEthing besides crotons. Please!), lots of color and low maintenance. We don’t agree on everything, but we’re smart enough to learn from each other - and from you.

Eric Young sent some photos he shot Sunday morning at Bloomingdale Golf Course, near his home in Brandon.

He writes, “There is a golf course very close to us and they ran their sprinklers all night. The constant water caused the trees/grass to COVERED with ice. Really a sight to see. The sound of icicles melting and falling was very beautiful.”

And one more:

Stunning pictures, Eric! As one who was here—and is still kicking herself for not taking photos when it snowed in 1977—hang onto those!
Now for the warmup.
Today I was home (sparing my co-workers a bit of hacking, snuffling and sneezing). When the sun came out, I thought it was time to give the huddled masses a break. They’ve been squeezed into the dining room for more than a week, where they don’t all get an equal shot at sun coming in the French doors, and the dry heat makes them thirsty and itchy.
When I put firesticks out, I spotted a drowsy hitchhiker. I don’t know whether he was heat-doped or shocked by the cooler air, but this guy did not move from his perch.

Great photos, Eric! Nice to see some beauty amidst the cold spell devastation…
Hope you feel better, Penny. By the way, did your hitchhiker EVER move? Hmmm…

Those ARE stunning pictures Eric. Nice camera work.
I had to do a bit of watering myself yesterday, Penny. Those plants I dragged into the house were as dry as my legs——yikes am I itchy. Trying to keep the cuttings alive for Sunday and I had to label them too. There are a few that are kinda iffy. I don’t know if they just haven’t taken yet or they don’t like all the temperature changes. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
I got a cold on Christmas day that took me a couple of weeks to shake. I was trying everything but standing on my head in the moonlight to get rid of it. Hope you feel better soon.

Please tell me I am not seeing a blue anole with an orange head. Did Eric color this in Photoshop? Or is this a new species altogether? Ha!

Haha silly little anole. Actually the lizard picture is not from me. I’m not sure who submitted that.. I need to get all the plants out of my garage, I have about 50 in there and I’m sure they all need to be watered. ugh that’s a big job.

I have everything uncovered and I am soaking everything. we lost a few but for the most part everything seems to be OK. a few surprise’s the Siberian tomato’s they was covered but I do not think I will make it. I am sure something’s in the next week will come back some will die but I am optimistic. The cat’s have moved on they were not there this morning maybe that’s a good sign. A good watering seems to have almost a healing power that and I warm sunny day….“Chip”

Penny, Every year I take up the mulch around my roses and amend the soil and put down new mulch. so, yes I would amend the soil.
Penny and Susan thank you for checking out the blog. I know it will get better with practice. Pumpkin

Do you make up your own amendment soil, Janis, or by it by the bag? Compost soil? Cow manure? Top soil? I’d love to know.

Hey Penny. Just seeing if you feel any better with your sniffles. We can always postpone Sunday if you aren’t up to it.

Janis, nice job on the new blog! I’m following now, too.
Chip and Diane, glad to hear that most of your plants will survive - especially after all the hard work you put into the crops! Your garden is truly amazing.
My seed swap cuttings aren’t looking too healthy. Guess it COULD be because of the drastic temperature swings and relocation of the little things. Hopefully, they’ll feel better today after some water and sunshine.

Well I have been very busy tonight and this why, Tom MacCubbin wrote this today. When can I prune?
When you cannot stand the brown it is time to do the pruning. I know many say leave the brown on but I think it does very little good. Also when the plant is damaged it can only think of putting out new growth. So, after a few days of warm weather when you can tell what is damaged feel free to do the needed pruning.
I could not take the brown and it warmed up.
Now what I add to my soil, Black Cow, Mills Magic, Bone meal and I am going to start using lots of Fish Emulsion and Superthrive.
I am glad you guys liked my blog, just wish I could write like Penny. Pumpkin

I worked on finding Janice’s blog last night. I signed up confirmed e-mail all of that I will retry later when my coffee has kicked in. With all of the damage from the cold finding stuff to compost and amend soil is easy it really depends on how much work you are willing to put into it. The way I do it is hard but it pays off later. I have done the buying bag after bag of dirt and it just never seems to be enough and plant’s started like this start out good then the root’s hit the untreated soil and sputter and stall and they just don’t seem to be as healthy as they were, I will post how I do my soil amending later if you are interested…“Chip”
