I’m not a huge sports fan, but there are a few sports I love to watch. And last weekend, I eagerly awaited the Wimbledon finals. I cheered as a I watched Serena Williams defeat Russian Vera Zvonareva in straight sets. Then, Spain’s Rafael Nadal decidely beat Tomas Berdych to win the men’s single’s champion. But despite Nadal’s solid tennis skills, it was hard to keep my eye on the ball. Why? Because Nadal is obviously in need of some comfortable underwear. He was constantly picking his undies. During one set, he picked his underwear 17 times. I haven’t seen that type of digging for gold since grade school.
Millions of people watch Wimbledon. To see a grown man unable to stop himself from this behavior begs the question: Why can’t he find comfortable underwear? Why can’t Nadal’s girlfriend and trainer—who watched from the sidelines—tell him to CUT IT OUT!
I know w a lot of athletes have this obsessive compulsive thing where they have to do things exactly the same way every time because they believe it’s good luck. Some scream, some bounce the ball a certain number of times, some tuck their hair behind their ears when it’s already there, and some twist the racket a few times in their hands. But digging underwear at virtually every point is by far the worst habit I have EVER seen. Dios Mio!
I would suggest Nadal try a different brand. Maybe wear a men’s mid-thigh cut (my husband loves these) or try boxers. Better yet, let’s get the folks at Jockey—who make the most comfortable underwear on the planet—to set him up with some wedge-free undies. That way, when he plays he’s not digging, and we can all keep our eye on the ball.
