I’ll be honest. I thought the cupcake craze was over.
You know what I mean.
Cute little cupcake bakeries have been popping up all over the country. All it took was for Magnolia Bakery in New York City to serve as a plot device on “Sex and the City” for the nuclear-hot flame of pop culture to be lit.
But like everything else that gets popular, it takes a little while for things to trickle their way to Tampa from New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles. Hell, it even takes a good six months for something in Atlanta to cross the Florida state line. Sometimes crazes disappear before they can make it this far south.
So when I heard that The Cupcake Spot was opening on South Dale Mabry in Tampa, I’ll admit that I thought the proprietor had swung a little late at the trendiness fastball.
I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Owner Nicole Rogers and her boyfriend Doug Longo, have been all but shoveling the damn things out the door since opening a little before Christmas. On Valentine’s Day, the crew made 1,600 cupcakes and ran out by 2 p.m.
“I’m standing here making more batter,” Rogers told me over the phone. “We opened at 11 a.m. and within 8 seconds I had 20 people in the store.”
I had fun hanging out with them and talking cupcakes. In addition to the story I wrote in today’s Flavor section, I shot a ton of photos and put them into a gallery.
And I put together this video. I highly advise you watch to the end to catch the Cuppy D. Cake theme song:
