Some Bay Area recycling centers don’t accept #5 plastics. #5 plastics are typically used for food containers like yogurt and hummus. You can check your plastic by turning it over to see the number stamped on the product. By recycling your #5 plastic through the Gimme 5 program, you are saving plastic from being sent to landfills.
If your recycling center does not accept #5 plastics, you can drop them off at the local Whole Foods Market. The partnership expects to keep 1 million pounds of #5 plastics out of landfills with the Gimme 5 program. The #5 plastic containers will then be turned into household items like colanders, cutting boards, toothbrushes, and razors.
