Had the pleasure of being a judge last night at a cook-off at the Rolling Pin Kitchen Emporium in Brandon between Tribune columnist and food blogger Jaden Hair and chef Gregory Howe of Vernona restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton. I judged the previous event in July, when Jaden took on and defeated Ray “Dr. BBQ” Lampe.
Secret recipe for last night’s competition? Zucchini. Each cooked an appetizer, a main course, a side dish and a dessert.
* Zucchini “Carpaccio” with Crispy Squash Bloom, Fennel and Mint-Flavored Goat Cheese
* Truffles Zucchini Rice Cake, Arugula Salad and Oven-Roasted Eggplant Sauce
* Zucchini Terrine with Fire-Roasted Red Pepper Sauce
* Zucchni and Walnut Cake with Carrot Ginger Anglaise and Cardamom Cream
Hair’s menu:
* Zucchini Rolls with Apricot Sweet Chili Sauce
* Panko Zucchini with Balsamic Teriyaki with Mirin Mashed Potatoes
Howe came out the winner, but both cooked some amazing dishes.

I can’t believe Jaden picked Howe as a competitor. That was pretty brave on her part. He is one of the best chefs in the Southern states. He did the popcorn bisque that we all loved so much.
