Gabby Sidibe lands on the cover of Elle magazine…but?

Elle magazine is celebrating its 25th anniversary with the release of four different covers dedicated to four of their 25 ‘Most Notable Women Under 25’.

I love that “Precious” star Gabby Sidibe landed on the cover of Elle magazine. But its obvious they saved a few inches off her arms and lightened her skin. But we shouldn’t be surprised about this. The practice of airbrushing is very popular in magazines. when they do it to celebrities like Faith Hill, Kate Winslet and Eva Longoria you know they’re going to do it to a plus-size, black woman like Gabby.

Landing a magazine cover is a big deal for any actress, particularly one like Gabby, who bucks every stereotype you can think of in Hollywood. Thanks Elle, for showing readers large, black women can be on the cover of your magazine—even if they’re lighter and have less meat.

This is a step in the right direction, toward there being true diversity in and on major fashion publications.  I look forward to the day when Gabby will be on a major cover that she does not have to share with other more “mainstream” actors.

Absolutely. Vanity Fair gave Gabby the shaft earlier this year omitting her from the cover. I think it does show more diversity, but at the same time, it also shows her looks have to be altered quite dramatically for her to even be considered for the cover. I mean really, look at that weave and the lighter complexion. I know airbrushing is a common Hollywood practice, but when are they going to allow people to be as they are on magazine covers?
