Wake up. Throw on some clothes. Get out to the barn.
The animals need to be fed and watered. Need to make sure they're OK, and relatively happy.
Cows, chickens, rabbits, pigs: Champions in training can be demanding.
Some like to be brushed; others spook easily. Some like to play; others think they're in charge.
Being the best isn't easy. But it's what drives these teens - that, and their animals.
You'll find stories behind every pen at Tampa Bay's agricultural fairs. Come along as we follow the stories of several teens preparing for the 2007 fair season.
Brianna Maslen, 15, Zephyrhills
My name is Brianna Maslen. I am 15 years old and am in 9th grade. I attend Zephyrhills High School, and I am a member of FFA.
This is my first year, and I am raising a hog for the Pasco County Fair. My hog’s name is Cleopatra. She is a hempshire cross. I enjoy working with her, and she enjoys being brushed. She is getting bigger every day and hopefully will make weight and make it in to the fair.
My hope is that I can have the experience to show her at the fair. I have been working very hard with her and have learned a lot along the way. I want to meet others that are showing and working with animals to learn new things about how to show them and work with them. Some day, I would like to become a veterinarian.
