Young Farmers' Fare

Wake up. Throw on some clothes. Get out to the barn.
The animals need to be fed and watered. Need to make sure they're OK, and relatively happy.
Cows, chickens, rabbits, pigs: Champions in training can be demanding.
Some like to be brushed; others spook easily. Some like to play; others think they're in charge.
Being the best isn't easy. But it's what drives these teens - that, and their animals.
You'll find stories behind every pen at Tampa Bay's agricultural fairs. Come along as we follow the stories of several teens preparing for the 2007 fair season.

Cleo Waves. Everyone Laughs

Brianna Maslen, 15, Zephyrhills

Cleo is doing very well. I weighed her tonight when I went to see her, and she is 213. The last couple days, when I let her out, she will roll on her side and stretches her front legs out, and it looks so much like she is waving. Everyone laughs.
I have learned so much about caring for a pig and about raising animals. It’s not easy, but it can be fun. I am a little nervous as fair is coming up now in about a month. I just hope she makes it in!
