Penny’s a Nurture And Hold (NAH): Nah, I won’t pull that out yet, it’s still got a green shoot. She likes dragonflies, lady bugs and new stuff only after weeding, pruning and fertilizing.
Kim’s a Want It Now (WIN): Everything pretty, everything now. She will resort to full-spectrum insecticides in desperate situations, and believes it’s her duty and right to buy new plants every weekend.
Both advocate Plant Choice (SOMEthing besides crotons. Please!), lots of color and low maintenance. We don’t agree on everything, but we’re smart enough to learn from each other - and from you.

I posted something about my new orchid the other day, and a couple of people asked to see a photo, so here it is.

I still don’t know what kind it is (amateur!), but I think it’s a dendrobium. When I bought it at the downtown farmers market, it was covered with buds. I almost missed the first blooms because it was grouped with my other orchids on the dining room table during the latest cold spell. (And it’s back there now.)
I have eight orchids now, and I’m hooked. I’ll be looking for more at Greenfest later this month.
The orange orchid below is also a mystery, so if you can identify it, let me know. It’s very different from the others (the other six are all phalaenopsis). It doesn’t bloom often, but when it does, it’s gorgeous.

Sorry the photos look a little out of focus—I’m a better gardener than photographer!

That was worth the wait to see. It is very unusual looking. Can’t wait for Greenfest myself

Thanks. Glad the photo is so out of focus, or you’d be able to see how dirty my floors are!
Greenfest is such a great event. I’ve already started my shopping list.
Speaking of shopping—I’m checking for bulbine just about every week. If anybody spots it at a Home Depot anywhere even CLOSE to Carrollwood, please let me know.

Kim,
I lost most of my orchids this winter and was on line looking up places to buy more and found this site.www.floridanativeorchids.com It is in St. Peterburg and they sell Florida native orchids. I am going to check it out next month. If anyone has been there let us know the prices. Pumpkin

When is Green-fest this year?...“chip”

Pumpkin—I checked out that orchid Web site, and omigosh, they have some beautiful plants! I seldom get over to St. Pete, but that would definitely be worth the trip. Maybe I’ll drag my poor son and husband over there this weekend.
Thanks for the info!

Nice orchids, Kim! I’ve tried to grow them before but with no luck. When the weather is “normal” you keep yours outside in the shade, right? Would a covered lanai be a good place?
Part of the fortune that will be made by Greenfest and the USF spring festival will be coming from me. I have so many empty spaces to fill! Do you think Greenfest will have carts you can rent? Last year I would’ve bought more if I could have carried more. I saw some folks with little red wagons….

Diane and I never miss USF’s spring and fall sale but have only gone to green fest once [ I think it was the first one] It must have developed, they did give away seedling red Mable trees we donated ours to a neighbor and it is doing well and about 16 ft now. Thanks for the info ...“Chip”

Kim, My husband said if I take him to Lennys for breakfast he will go with me. So, I may see you there.
Janna,If I were you I would take your own wagon to Greenfest. We took our big plastic wheel barrel last year and I saw others with them too.
Chip, It has grown, so get there early. Pumpkin

Janna—Penny says she thinks they have carts to rent at Green Fest—and I think I remember that, too.
Be careful if you bring your own. I left mine for a few minutes at a USF sale, and a couple walked off with it. I had a ribbon tied to it, so I tracked it down. They were very apologetic—thought they had carts just sitting around for folks to use. (I wish!)

I keep my orchids out on the pergola most of the year. They get some sun out there. When it gets really hot, though, I make sure to skooch them into a shade spot.
My mom has a bunch of gorgeous orchids. She keeps them on a table in her lanai year-round (in Venice). They get lots of light, but it’s indirect. She never fertilizes, and they bloom again and again. The leaves are healthy and green. She has a magic touch.

Oh yes, last year there were carts available to rent. Kim, I had a couple “borrow” my cart at Greenfest. My cart looked just like the rental ones which made it all the more vulnerable. Apologies were given and I’m sure it was an honest mistake, but now I have my name in permanent marker along WITH a ribbon tied to it.

Thanks everyone, for the cart info and suggestions! I’m really psyched about the fesival this year.
Penny and Kim, do you know what time you’ll be speaking on Saturday? Approximate location of your tent? We’ll all want to stop and say “hi” to our favorite Dirt girls!

Love the orchid Kim. It is quite the beauty. I am no expert on the types yet but I can see why you picked both of these. Orchids can be addictive. I’ve got a couple though that I don’t think i brought in soon enough during one of our cold spells. I’ve got yellow leaves. So sad.
As for those carts. The ladies out front suggest you shop at all the booths first (that is if you don’t have your own cart) and have the people at that booth hold your purchase. They all were very accommodating. Then you go back up front and rent the cart, pick up your purchases and then go get your car to load them up. It’s way easier if there are two of you but it’s doable with one. Everyone is pretty honest.

As Penny said, we weathered the rain last year. All the diehard Greenfesters brought their umbrellas and when the rain started we just opened them up and kept shopping. The merchandise can’t get ruined. It wasn’t ideal but we didn’t want to miss out on the goodies. Besides, Penny and I were exchanging seed and cuttings. Who wants to miss out on that?
Yard Crashers——-wouldn’t that be a dream come true? All those hunky guys in your back yard and remodeling to boot. I would absolutely love that.

Sounds like fun everything but the rain part! the first time Diane and went to the USF’s plant sale I thought we were going to get run over by folks with there carts! when they opened the doors stampede came to mind! my old rusty garden wagon can’t be confused with any they rent there so mine has is safe cant wait ....“Chip”

Kim, I think that your new orchid is either a Miltonia or an Oncidium. Your orange one appears to be a Dendrobium from the “cane-like” appearance of the plant. You can search for “orchid identification” and pull up many sites that will help you identify your orchids. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the orchid IDs. I love buying them a plant fairs and the farmers market, but they never seem to put the names on them. And a friend who is somewhat of an expert was no help at all!
I bought a couple more since I posted this, so I’m going to read up on these things.
