And In The Mornin’, I’m Makin’ Waffles

In September, I did a story on Sara O’Donnell. a 33-year-old Los Angeles visual artist better known as the offbeat culinary persona Average Betty. The graduate of Gaither High School in Tampa has become one of the hottest food personalities on the Web, showcasing her videos at AverageBetty.com.

As I explained in the story, she edits the video herself and does all the animation. Somewhere in each three-minute bit, she fits in a little bit of cooking amid the campy costume changes, physical humor and over-the-top sound effects.

Gathered under the Average Betty umbrella are such characters as Fish Camp Betty (who teaches how to grill your catch), Emo Betty (an angst-ridden employee of Pita Hut), Cuckoonut Betty (who skewers coconut shrimp) and Business Betty (who craves the comfort of mac & cheese and moans salaciously with each forkful, “Oh … mac daddy.").

“A lot of people call what I do a video blog,” she says by phone from Los Angeles. “I call it a show. It’s episodic content. I generally consider myself a storyteller.”

Anyway, her latest is The Waffler. And, as usual, it’s brilliant. And timely.
