Wake up. Throw on some clothes. Get out to the barn.
The animals need to be fed and watered. Need to make sure they're OK, and relatively happy.
Cows, chickens, rabbits, pigs: Champions in training can be demanding.
Some like to be brushed; others spook easily. Some like to play; others think they're in charge.
Being the best isn't easy. But it's what drives these teens - that, and their animals.
You'll find stories behind every pen at Tampa Bay's agricultural fairs. Come along as we follow the stories of several teens preparing for the 2007 fair season.
Amanda Guzman, 15, Zephyrhills
Hi. My name is Amanda Guzman, and I am 17 years old. I’m in the 11th grade, attending Zephyrhills High School. This year at the Pasco County Fair in Dade City, I’m showing a market steer. I am showing a steer because I want to raise money so I could use it for college. My steer’s name is LongShot. I named him LongShot because when I went to weigh in, everyone was telling me that my steer was too light, and so it’s gonna be a long shot for me to get him to make the proper weight before fair. He weighs about 500 pounds now, but at the first weigh-in he weighed about 390 pounds. He is getting fatter every day! So my LongShot might not be such a long shot! All he needs is about 450 more pounds!
