Penny Carnathan

Penny’s a Nurture And Hold (NAH): Nah, I won’t pull that out yet, it’s still got a green shoot. She likes dragonflies, lady bugs and new stuff only after weeding, pruning and fertilizing.

Kim Franke-Folstad

Kim’s a Want It Now (WIN): Everything pretty, everything now. She will resort to full-spectrum insecticides in desperate situations, and believes it’s her duty and right to buy new plants every weekend.

Both advocate Plant Choice (SOMEthing besides crotons. Please!), lots of color and low maintenance. We don’t agree on everything, but we’re smart enough to learn from each other - and from you.

A couple more reasons to fall in love with groovy chicks

After seeing Sunday’s post on the succulents show, Susan Gillespie emailed a couple photos to give me an idea of my future with my little Echeveria—better known as hen and chicks.

“I have these in a bowl by the front door,” Susan wrote. “They get all day sun from the west from about noon on and very little rain because they are under a portico, so they don’t rot. They are very easy to start. Just plop a flowerette or even a leaf and it will root.”

Susan started with two or three small plants in a big bowl, about 15 inches across. They really do breed like rabbits! Er, chickens!

Here’s a bowl she made for a friend filled with spillovers, and probably some rooting leaves, from the front door container. (I love this bowl!)

Like these too ... very unusual.

Thanks for the photos, Susan. I have a feeling you MADE that blue and white bowl. Nice. I have to get some Perlite to re-pot what I have, then I’ll start sticking some leaves in dirt so there will be plenty to share!

Look at you girls—-starting a hens and chicks explosion. I love it. Can’t wait to see the results. Pics, please.

Yes, Janna, I did do the mosaics on that bowl. Thanks! It was a Christmas gift for my massage therapist.

Susan,  The blue bowl is now famous. It is showing up on the front page of TBO.com in the lower right hand side of the page.

I may end up with a second career after all, eh?
