TAMPA - Parts of Florida’s Gulf Coast are under a hurricane warning as Tropical Storm Alberto quickly and unexpectedly gains strength.
Floridians had expected the first named storm of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season to be an easy start to the season, which started less than two weeks ago. But forecasters say it’s possible that Alberto could become a hurricane.
At 11 a.m. Alberto’s top sustained winds were just four mph shy of hurricane strength.
The hurricane warning is from Longboat Key near Sarasota to the Ochlockonee River south of Tallahassee.
Alberto’s core isn’t expected to reach Florida until tomorrow.
But rain is already falling in the state and two tornados were sighted, one in Hardy and the other in Polk County. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

Officials expect some coastal flooding in low-lying areas, especially around the north end of Tampa Bay, areas in northeast St. Petersburg and along the beaches from Madeira Beach northward. Pinellas predicts the most critical period for this storm to be between 3 am and 2 pm Tuesday when tides and winds will reach their peaks.
The Pinellas County Citizen Information (CIC) line opened at 9 am Monday to answer questions from the public and assist them with their needs.
Residents are encouraged to call (727) 464-4333 for Pinellas County information throughout this storm threat.
Red Cross is working to place three shelters on standby in north, mid and south Pinellas County, but officials do not expect to issue any evacuation orders.

TAMPA - Local rainy conditions created few problems at Tampa International Airport on Monday as the first line of Tropical Storm Alberto approached the Florida mainland.
Among 189 departures scheduled Monday after 9:30 a.m., just one flight - a Delta Air Lines departure to Boston - was canceled and six other flights were delayed.
Real-time information for flights at Tampa is available on-line at http://www.tampaairport.com/sitemap.html where a link to flight data is shown.
The Federal Aviation Administration’s real-time display showed operations at all major U.S. airports with the exception of San Francisco International were within 15 minutes of schedule.
The FAA shows national airport information at http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/usmap.jsp
Aiport officials say travelers should call the airlines rather than the airport regarding their flights for the most up-to-date information as the storm continues toward Florida.
