Leaving Dauphin Island this morning we stopped to watch a boat named Patches chug down a canal next to the roadway. Burlap bags bulging with their morning catch heaped on the bow.
“Ya ee oistuhs?†the pudgier man asked in a slow, swampy draw.
I was raised in the South, but it took a moment for me to understand the dialect.
I asked him to repeat it.
After a moment or two it hit me, and I understood: “You eat oysters?â€
“Sometimes,†I replied as he and his crew floated away.

Thanks for making me smile. I just loved your take on this guy’s dialect! I, too, am from the south but occasionally get stumped by true locals from the off-the-road areas.
Also, I wanted to thank you for the work you’re doing on the Gulf Coast. I know it must be tough to be uprooted from your own home to spend time in an area that is so devastated. What you’re doing is wonderful and so very necessary. Thanks for not forgetting about everyone there and all that they’ve been though.
