Hillsborough County’s Emergency Management officials and local first responders are continuing to monitor Tropical Storm Ernesto.
All Hillsborough County public schools will remain open Wednesday Aug. 30.
Weather conditions on Wednesday could include gusts of winds and rain, but no dangerous weather is expected in the Tampa Bay area.
There are no evacuations ordered and no closings at this time.

I am a senior and a magnet student. I take two buses to get school everyday. And I spend approximately 2 and half hours on a bus. I personally don’t think that it’s right to send us to school when they aren’t exactly sure what the storm is going to do. And it can change at any time. I’m majoring in environmental sciences and this is a major topic. This is wrong. No School Wednesday!!!!

me and my sister travel an hour to school everyday to go to sickles high school. its unreasoable for hillbourough to go to school tomorrow during a tropical storm when our principal cant event handle a day when there is a thunderstorm. in situations like this we end up in the gym and the cafeteria for the bulk or the day. its a waste of gas and money for the scool system to be putting out when we wont be learning much or anything anyway.

This in reply to Kevin Philpot’s comment. It is apparent to me that he has no idea what it is like to be a teacher. I am a teacher and it is ten times harder to change plans and keep up with the demands of the curriculum time line than just to sit at home. I know that most people think we are just glorified baby-sitters but teaching really is more than that. My suggestion is that if you are going to bash an entire profession then you should have some idea first on what that profession is all about.

I agree with you Paul Sisco....a little summer rain isnt gonna kill anyone! Please dont close the schools over a little rain, I cant take my kid to work!!!

When the news and weathermen are saying tomorrow will be a rainy day....why would the school board feel compelled to close. Should every business as well. As I business owner, I doubt it.
Yes, I want my children safe, however, that would mean they really could not go to school any afternoon in Hillsborough County because at ANYTIME there could be a huge rainstorm, with lightning, hail, who knows? This is a big RAIN storm. Even the winds are way down. Cautious is good, but paranoia is not.

Judging by the grammar and spelling of many of these posts they are coming from students that need to be in school tomorrow!

hillsborough county should close school. because we really don’t know what the storm is going to do we can’t really predict whats going to happen. how do u know that the storm isn’t gonna turn and hit us. i think they should close schools just in case anything happens.

To those that feel like teachers (or other school district employees) just want a day off (they are alotted sick and personal days)! ............ you’re not the one that has to make sure those children are safe and sound if the weather takes a turn for the worse. They are! It will be total chaos if schools are open tomorrow and then released early. In addition, for those teachers that have families, they must ensure they take care of them. Wouldn’t you do the same? It’s always better to be safe than sorry in my opinion.

It is well known that all aspects of tropical weather are a gamble. As for my children, I will gamble with them under my supervision. It is also commonly known that officials make decisions based on the greater good of society. I exercise subjective powers of personal safety on a family level, not a school board decision. In cases of devastation, I know I can deal with my own decisions that the government cannot dictate. Self reliance is the key when officials cannot be trusted on a general basis. In light of previous disasters, overestimation of danger is reliably the best gamble.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY NEEDS TO GET THINGS PRIORITIZED!!!!! i’m hoping that they will pay for damages made to my car tomorrow on the way to and from school...i would take the day off, but i have all honors and AP courses to worry about...can’t they make life a little easier on us?

From what I have seen over MANY years of raising children, in the Hillsborough County School District, is that they pretty much always make the right decisions concerning school closures. So......they may not TELL us as much in advance as we would prefer, but they haven’t put our kids at risk before, why would they now.
Think about the single moms who have to go to work tomorrow regardless of storms or whether their kids are in school or home alone.

Hurricanes are hard to predict. I think we should get the day off. It’s not like we can’t afford it.
This hurricane season is pretty clean.
I’m not a risk-taker :D

I cant believe that you are making my kids got to school. With all the rain and wind could be so dangerous for high school kids ti change classes and eat outside. When it is raining my kids said that they dont even swithch classes. It is riduculus.

i’m a senior in high school and i drive to school every day, traffic is bad enough with 600 other teenage drivers, let alone when its raining.

I can’t believe that the children of hillsborough county don’t have the day off, but in other county’s they do. You need to give the children a day of because of this storm. It can injure many people.

How lucky you all are to be complaining about your kids attending (or not) school in the midst(?) of a hurricane. My daughter is on week 3 being hospitalized with ruptured appendix, so obviously, I’d be grateful to have to contend with the choice of whether to send her or not.
However, I work in a school whose front steps are right on the Bayshore, and we follow what ever Hillsborough County decides. And yes, I’ve been in South Tampa in heavy rains and wondered if I was going to make it home or not.
Give them time...it’s not here yet. Then, if school is in session, keep your kids at home. They are your kids.
