The Zappa Family Trust may not single-handedly give posthumous releases a good name but its certainly more judicious in its offerings than, say, the folks at the 2Pac Family Trust.
The latest from ZPT, “Zappa/Wazoo,” is a gold mine for fans of Frank Zappa the experimental composer. Recorded live in 1972, it features Zappa conducting a 19-piece “electric orchestra.” cecFans of Zappa’s doody jokes best stay away. This is all instrumental save for Zappa’s introductions.
It’s not merely Zappa’s “Grand Wazoo” live, although that album’s title track gets things going in fairly conventional manner. By Zappa standards, it’s a straightforward number in 4/4 but it gives his excellent soloists space to blow.
“Approximate” follows, compensating for the earlier number’s lack of complexity tenfold. Zappa’s intro explains what’s going on musically, but what it sometimes resembles is two separate bands engaged in a balletic marital arts duel a la “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”
“The Adventures of Greggery Peccary”, which dominates the second disc, ups the adventurousness even more, as Zappa calls an audible, altering the arrangement all the while fretting that he hopes it won’t “sleaze off before your very ears.”
As challenging as it is, “Peccary” has moments of sublime beauty, uproarious humor and mind-boggling musicianship and the whole half-hour-plus number deserves - and rewards - repeat listens.
Beautifully packaged as well, “Zappa/Wazoo? is a worth addition to Frank’s catalog.
