John Allman

If you’ve ever wandered the aisles at the video store or surfed the DVR pay-per-view options and seen a bunch of movies that you’ve never heard of, chances are John has watched them. Why? He loves movies. All kinds of movies. Good, bad, so-bad-they’re good, even the truly unwatchable ones. He mostly loves horror and science-fiction and drive-in exploitation movies that most upstanding model citizens wouldn’t dare watch. Then he writes up his thoughts so you can decide - watch, don’t watch or avoid at all costs. Sometimes he even gets to talk to the cool folks who make some of your favorite films.

The Lowdown: Or the unbelievably great season that set the stage for the end game.

“Lost” entered its fifth season riding high after a fabulous fourth year that expanded on the show’s mythology, took some survivors off the island, moved the island and set in motion a chain of events that would bring those Oceanic passengers back.

The question, of course, wasn’t if they would return. But how, and when.

For longtime fans, Season Five will be remembered most for its deaths. Major characters gave their lives to keep the fragile balance of space and time intact. Jeremy Bentham, ie Locke, found himself once again a pawn, pushed (literally) over the edge by the devious Ben. Daniel Faraday watched one love die, then found himself slain by his own mother, albeit a younger version of herself. Juliet gave her life to try and rocket her friends back in time by beating Jughead’s payload until it detonated.

And Jacob, the white-shirted, could-be God, whose story finally came sharper into focus, having touched specific survivors at different stages of their lives, found his own fate at the manipulation of the mysterious Man in Black.

Few shows have ever given viewers so much to chew on, have ever consistently maintained a narrative structure so expertly, have ever made the life and death choices of fictional characters feel so urgent.

The sixth, and final season, begins in February.

The show’s creators have refused to allow any promotional advertisements to offer even a glimpse of what’s to come.

It’s a savvy, and respectful, choice.

“Lost” belongs to the fans who have gone on this incredible five-year journey every step of the way so far. This is no longer a serialized genre show about castaways on an island. It’s an epic march to something that TV has yet to ever achieve. Enlightenment is too pompous a word. But it’s close.
