Pontiak - brothers Van, Jennings and Lain Carney - play heavy-psych rock that should resonate with fans of Black Mountain and Dead Meadow. The brothers hail from rural Virginia while their sound hails from late ‘60s sludge, ‘70s prog and the SST bands most likely to own Hawkwind’s “Space Ritual.” The Carneys are touring behind their second Thrill Jockey full-length, “Maker,” on which the amps are set on stun and the controls set for the heart of the sun.
Pontiak performs at the New World Brewery tonight (June 11, 2009). It will be a bittersweet evening as it’s also the final Tampa performance by History, who will be just that after this weekend. King of Spain and Glasgow also are on the bill. Start the weekend early. Show time is 9 p.m. and admission is $7. Call (813) 248-4969.
