Larry Symmonds arrived on Davis Islands around 9:45 a.m. and will hang out until about 7 p.m. He has a good view from his TECO truck, watching the boats pass through the canal.
A troubleshooter for the electric company for 35 years, Symmonds said he’s watched Gasparilla this way about 10 times.
“They always put one of us on the island in case there’s an emergency,” said Symmonds, 53, of Town ’N Country.
Most of the time the issues aren’t serious.
“Usually it’s someone running into a pole that’s the issue,” he said.
