Shock. Total shock. That was the reaction in the audience when “American Idol” finalist Chris Daughtry - predicted by many to be the last singer standing - was booted off in Wednesday’s voting.
In the most competitive “Idol” race yet, Daughtry’s exit narrowed the contestants to three. The winner will be named May 24.
“Surprised?” Host Ryan Seacrest asked an unsmiling Daughtry, visibly caught off guard.
The 26-year-old rocker, drowned out by loud boos and screams of “No!” replied: “Yes.”
The other “Idols” stood speechless, mouths agape. Even the judges - usually unflappable - didn’t foresee Daughtry’s ouster: Simon Cowell’s jaw fell slack; Paula Abdul’s eyes filled with tears.

Next week when you watch the show, close your eyes while Taylor is singing. This way you can get an idea of how he would sound on the radio. Just listening to him and not getting caught up in his goofyness and I guarantee that you would never buy his record. He should have been voted off.
Por (Michele Vickers) on May 11, 2006
My husband and I were so disappointed and quite frankly, shocked, that Chris was voted off! We’ve tried on several occasions to place our votes, but have never been able to get through.
I too would love to see the numbers. It would be nice if the public were able to place their votes using their computers, as well as the phone lines.
I’m also disappointed to read other comments on this website from people who simply have no class.
If you DON’T watch the show, or would rather watch football, than what were you doing reading this article or these comments?
So please…. keep your irrelevant and rude opinions to yourself.

I was totally shocked. I really thought Katherine was out. While Chris is not my favorite I do not think he deserved to go last night. However, at this point in the competition anything is possible. It will be down to Elliot and Taylor! Good luck to both, I’d be happy seeing either of them win. Gotta love the show!
Por (Esther Rivera) on May 11, 2006
I’ve been wanting Katherine to leave for the longest time. She’s been in the bottom 3-2 for the last few weeks, she’s been screwing up the songs and she does not perform well under pressure. what kind of crap was that last week singing on her knees? GIRL GIVE IT UP!!!! I was hoping she was the one leaving. Don’t get to cocky Katherine, you will be leaving next week. GO TAYLOR!!!

Chris truly had the best chance of a successful career of anybody remaining. Taylor will likely win now but unfortunately, he will not go anywhere after that.
Chris will get a deal regardless because of his talent and singing ability. It was a shock and makes one question if this show is rigged!

i thought that this was a COMPLETE and TOTAL mistake. chris is BYFAR the best . elliot makes to many weird noises, taylor is a complete SPAS and i just don’t think kat will be able to live up to the expectations of the american idol. chris would have been more successful than all of them combined. this is jsut my opinion, obviously but i do not agree with america, we are quite stupid, indeed!
Por (Dennis Young) on May 11, 2006
American Idol will be the biggest loser. Chris was the most talented by far and his removal will cause ratings to drop. The 3 left are amateurs. Elliott belongs on Broadway and Taylor on a cruise ship. Katherine is pretty and could develop, but none had Chris’ talent and charisma.
Por (Jennifer Bricker) on May 11, 2006
Wow! I cant belive the only REAL person with talent was booted of the show. IT’s a Real shame! Hopefully he will get a record deal anyways.
Por (Tina Eden) on May 11, 2006
Unfortuneatly, this show is about fan base not talent. It was obvious that Chris was the better choice to stay. If it had been based on talent the outcome would of been different. Anyway best of luck to you Chris. Go Elliott.Your the best pick as far as I’m concerned.I’ll be voteing like crazy for you at my house. A Loyal fan in Dunedin

I could have cared less abot AI, but I got caught up in the hype because my kids were watching it. I have to say, Chris got ripped off and it was ovbious that the girl was going to stay on. No offenese to her, but she’s been the worst of the bunch for about 4-5 weeks.
Por (Joseph Castaldo) on May 11, 2006
If you didnt call in and vote, stop complaining. Regardless of how well a perfomer is, its based on number of calls. The way I see it, too many people AUTOMATICALLY assumed he would be the last man standing, that they didnt bother to call in and vote and the results are in…...Good-Bye, Chris.
Por (Lynne James) on May 11, 2006
I think that people voted for Katherine to take the votes away from Chris in order to take him out of the running against Taylor in order for Taylor to win. Someone figured out how to get rid of Taylors only competition.
Por (Gina Driggers) on May 11, 2006
I believe that there should be a national boycott of Idol on Tuesday. Let the ratings fall, I could care less who wins now, let’s face it the most talented vocal and best choice was Chris and now he is gone. The poll on AOL showed 68% thought Kathrine should go and only 4% thought Chris should go.
The boycott is just to show America that Chris really was the best choice. I also wish him the best. It also kinda makes you really hope Katherine goes home soon. Where does that leave you, Elliott and Taylor? Pleease!
Por (Lois Brown) on May 11, 2006
Chris will be fine, he will have a career now, even without the win. He has a great talent and he is very likeable. Elliot “needs” the win or the semi-finalist position, I think America realizes that and are voting to that end. Catherine likewise will do well after the show, I just hope America doesn’t need to see Taylor go-

What a huge disappointment! This is the first season that I watched this show and after Wednesdays results I am not sure that I will continue. I thought from the beginning when Lisa was voted off before “chicken Little” that this had to be rigged. Not that he was that bad, but she was certainly better. I agree with some of the other post in that Taylor isn’t really someone that you would want to hear on the radio all the time, and Elliott seems more like Broadway. (Both good in their own way but just not radio musicians). I think Chris was the perfect fit for the title. “America votes” well I would like to know why the results are never posted and who actually keeps count of these votes?
Por (Mark Edward) on May 11, 2006
To have a winner, you must have a loser. Good Luck Chris. You’re truly a great artist. You’ll survive without Idol as the rest will too!

I am amazed at some of the comments on this page. Indeed this was a surprise - but Catherine not excelling in “Elvis” doesn’t make her “suck” - I think it was unfair to expect a woman to compete at singing “Elvis.” She sings beautifully and engages the audience with her beautiful smile. Taylor is tons of fun to watch. Chris does a great job. They all sing different styles. If you prefer rock music, that doesn’t mean that the others suck. And how can someone be ANGRY at Catherine for not being voted off. Some of these comments sound so ignorant I can’t believe it! and…...why would this indicate that it is fixed? In whose behalf? Chris’ fan base just didn’t work hard enough this week.
Por (Kathy Mitcheson) on May 11, 2006
I was totally shocked that Chris was voted off. I like the 3 remaining contestants, but noone has the star power that Chris has. I wonder how well, the “new” American Idol will fare out there in the real world. There has to be some mistake. I personally voted last night 23 times. I can’t believe Katharine wasn’t the one to leave. She has a beautiful voice, but it seems every week, she messes up. That isn’t professional of her. I think last night was my last night to ever watch IDOL.
Por (Frank J. Edwards, Sr.) on May 11, 2006
Catherine should be voted off - anybody watches the rest of this fixed Idol is an AMERICAN IDIOT - this is rigged for the chic to win…she forgets her LYRICS and stays on…NOT!!!

Who the heck didn’t vote ? ? ? I admit that I, also, thought Chris was a natural talent and that would take him through to be the newest American Idol. I did vote, at least 10 times each time. Chris’ stage presence and vocal range is outstanding…..not every song was perfect; but let’s remember these are not professional entertainers. I know when Chris is finished with his commitments to American Idol, there will be more than one record producer waiting with contracts for him. By the way, Reuben Studdard, an American Idol winner….what is he doing now?
Thanks for wearing your wedding band, Chris..it shows the kind of person you really are! You are who you are and you never waivered from your roots.
Por (Jeff Mathis) on May 11, 2006
I will not watch another minute of the season. What a joke that the best of all, the most marketable of any of the remaining candidates.
Taylor should be on the Love Boat…
Elliot just does not have the looks
Kat will be very successful…
I am sorry Taylor is like a gimmic, any one justify that some major label is going to sign him, NOOOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Por (sandra h powers) on May 11, 2006
i think now that it is all a set up - there is no way that he could have possibly been voted off. i believe that it was intentional, probably due to having him not committed to idol and available to the band. there is no comparison in talent of the three guys and “the pretty girl with clevage”. i believe that the show will lose lots of viewers, justifibly so.
Por (louis quiles) on May 11, 2006
All we needed was for Chris to win so we could just add another pearl jam/creed/ nickelback sounding singer to the ever rotting music scene. Luckly we were spared. Even on his best day he couldn’t match Taylor’s kinetic energy nor Katherine’s graceful beauty and voice.
