Ben Welch, 12-year-old son of Harold and Betsie Welch of Seffner, will be featured on the syndicated show “The Doctors” on Oct. 9.
In 2005, Ben came down with MRSA, similiar to a staff infection. while playing soccer. He was running a 105 fever and complaining about his left leg.
The next day, his white blood count was at 40,000 and he has a bone infection. He had a 4-hour operation and doctors found that 20% of Ben’s femur bone has been eaten away. A hole was blown out of the back of his femur bone and the muscle was eaten off of the bone up to his hip.
After that he had 4 more opeations and was in a wheel chair for 15 months. He is playing soccer today, but because his muscle was cut into 4 different times, he is never going to be as fast as he used to be.
“The Doctors” is seen week days at 3 p.m. on WFLA, Channel 8.
