John Allman

If you’ve ever wandered the aisles at the video store or surfed the DVR pay-per-view options and seen a bunch of movies that you’ve never heard of, chances are John has watched them. Why? He loves movies. All kinds of movies. Good, bad, so-bad-they’re good, even the truly unwatchable ones. He mostly loves horror and science-fiction and drive-in exploitation movies that most upstanding model citizens wouldn’t dare watch. Then he writes up his thoughts so you can decide - watch, don’t watch or avoid at all costs. Sometimes he even gets to talk to the cool folks who make some of your favorite films.

The Lowdown: At this point, there’s no point in criticizing the existence of yet another entry in the impossible-to-kill “Saw” series.

The fans who have followed Jigsaw and his cabal of born-again killers, those who sought redemption and then educated the unlearned, won’t care that the past three movies have basically been the same.

They won’t care that the traps have grown so elaborate that they defy the laws of probability. Who could possibly afford the equipment, much less possess the know-how, to transform basic implements into such well-timed killing machines?

This fifth sequel to what began as a basic premise, two men locked in a room, chained and given the choice to live or die, doesn’t whip back and forth in time as much as parts IV and V, but there’s still enough backstory to digest that first-time horror fans won’t be able to keep up with the minutiae.

By this point, there are so many relationships at play that you need a scorecard from the previous outing to know who knows what, who did what and who to trust.

Even the dead make multiple appearances from junkie urchin Amanda, who survived her fate in Part I but perished in Part IV, to Jigsaw himself, who has been everything from a withered, dying patient to an open body on the autopsy table.

“Saw VI” is tolerable, but there’s still too much going on.

If the makers are intent on releasing a “Saw VII” in 3D as has been threatened, they need to begin a new chapter, lose the existing characters, jettison Jigsaw to the hereafter and start anew.

Otherwise, the dwindling ranks of Saw fanatics may skip the next chapter altogether.
