Stephen Hammill and Rommie Johnson - Couch Potatoes

RIP, HD DVD

The format war is over.

With Toshiba’s announcement Sunday that it will no longer manufacture HD DVD players and recorders, Sony’s Blu-ray is now the de facto delivery device for high-definition movies.

HD DVD stalwart Universal Studios also announced Sunday its plans to re-release its movies for Blu-ray.

What this means for movie collectors is studios will begin releasing their back catalogues onto Blu-ray with a new fervor. Expect the slow trickle to become a torrent by year’s end.

For HD DVD collectors, you’re out of luck.

Gamestop stores have confirmed they’ll no longer accept HD DVD items for trade-in, effective immediately. That includes used HD DVD discs or Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on drives.

In the video game console war, this scores a loss for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and a big victory for Sony’s Playstation 3, for which analysts expect to see a 10% sales boost in the wake of the decision.

Who are the Couch Potatoes?
  • Master Sergeant in 'Rainbow Six: Vegas'ROMMIE JOHNSON is a standard carbon-based lifeform who covers entertainment for TBO.com and the Tribune as an occasional diversion from the maelstrom of doubt that boils within.

  • And, yes, he gets paid for this. Which is a good thing, because his parents are raising the rent.
