Reissue: Review: Sebadoh, “Bubble & Scrape”

Eric Gaffney was Sebadoh wild card, the member whose hardcore rants and noise outbursts jolted listeners lulled by the low-key melodicism of Lou Barlow and Jason Lowenstein. His numbers weren’t to everyone’s taste but they went a long way toward raising Sebadoh above the low-fi indie-rock mire.

“Bubble & Scrape” (1993) was the final album by the original trio, with Gaffney departing the next year. It’s a, perhaps the, peak for the band, with Barlow contributing some of his most memorable tunes - particularly opening track “Soul and Fire” - and Lowenstein coming into his own as both singer and songwriter. Gaffney is, well, Gaffney. “Elixir is Zog” and his other pieces may lack the craft of his band mates works, but give “Bubble & Scrape” a sense of humor and connection to its punk rock predecessors.

Domino’s recent reissue adds 15 bonus tracks including a Necros cover, a demo of “Soul and Fire” and plenty of home-recorded craziness.

Sebadoh made more coherent albums following Gaffney’s departure, but they never were quite as much fun.
