On “America’s Got Talent” last night the flamboyant Prince Poppycock toned down the camp and tried to do a serious operatic performance of “Nessun Dorma,” (an interpretation of a fairytale rescue of a princess). This got a buzzer from Piers Morgan who finds Poppycock is not so much fun when he does opera for real.
“I think you’ve blown it, I’m afraid,” Morgan said, noting the clownish Prince took himself too seriously. Morgan was booed by the audience and scolded by fellow judge Sharon Osbourne.
Prince Poppycock probably won’t win tonight. The outlandish character created by 32-year-old singing store clerk John Quale from Los Angeles was the only act to receive the buzzer on Tuesday’s edition of the NBC variety competition.
Michael Grimm, the fedora-wearing crooner from Waveland, Miss., impressed with “When a Man Loves a Woman” and 10-year-old opera soprano Jackie Evancho was amazing on “Ave Maria” from Verdi’s “Otello.”
The novelty act Fighting Gravity, frat brothers from Virginia Tech, probably won’t win but they’ve got a future as a knock-off of The Blue Men group.
The results will be revealed on NBC tonight.
