Out Of Left Field

A sarcastic look back at the darker side of sports.

•During a men’s soccer game between Congo’s Socozaki and Nyuki System a riot broke out in the stadium. While riots at soccer games are fairly common throughout the world, this one was unique in that rumors of witchcraft are believed to have been the cause of the unrest. Fans of the opposing team first became suspicious when their star player’s skull mysteriously shrank while attempting to head in an onside kick.

•Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley experienced a case of premature e-publication on his blog when he mistakenly uploaded some photos of his pregame ritual of studying game material given to him by his coach. The problem was, he forgot the always-important step of any proper pregame preparation; putting on his jock strap.

The Cheap Seats

Somewhere between scribehood and fandom is a folding blue chair where the beer is always cold and the hometown team is always winning. Close enough to see the snap of a 1-2 slider yet far enough away for the crowd to become a part of the spectacle. Welcome to The Cheap Seats.

As a multimedia producer-reporter for TBO.com, Scott Butherus splits his time between event coverage and working the graveyard shift on the sports desk. When he's not writing pithy headlines and preparing TBO sports pages for your consumption, he can be found mixing it up with players and fans to find the stories that make sports more than just a game.

Scott came to TBO in 2007 after becoming the first graduate ever from the University of South Florida's multimedia journalism masters program. Scott is the host of TBO's Buccaneer pregame show, The Plank, and the TBO Rays Podcast. A native Floridian, he is the foremost expert on Spring Training baseball in the state and despite being a poor fisherman knows all the best spots. He is also the Tampa Tribune's reigning fantasy baseball champion.
