So, of course, less than 24 hours after I say there aren’t very many free online games of acceptable quality, the front page of Yahoo! links to a list of 14 pretty solid examples. OK, so I was wrong. Not like it’s the first time.
After working through most of them, our favorites from the list include:
“N”: We’d actually played this one before, but totally forgot about it. Which is a shame, because this is really good stuff. It’s a fun 2-D platformer, somewhat reminiscent of “Lode Runner,” but with a ninja. It goes without saying that ninjas are friggin’ cool.
“Grand Theft Auto 2”: Yep, it’s the full game you remember from the original PlayStation. (The first “GTA” is on there, too.) Before “GTA 3” ushered the series into the third dimension and revolutionized the industry with its open-world gameplay, this one was a pretty fun ride in its own right.
But the hands-down best discovery is this:
It’s a free, online Flash version of “Portal,” which was our game of the year for 2007! It’s not the exact same game, but a 2-D version of the same concept, which means 19 all-new puzzles to solve. Suh-weeet!
