John Allman

If you’ve ever wandered the aisles at the video store or surfed the DVR pay-per-view options and seen a bunch of movies that you’ve never heard of, chances are John has watched them. Why? He loves movies. All kinds of movies. Good, bad, so-bad-they’re good, even the truly unwatchable ones. He mostly loves horror and science-fiction and drive-in exploitation movies that most upstanding model citizens wouldn’t dare watch. Then he writes up his thoughts so you can decide - watch, don’t watch or avoid at all costs. Sometimes he even gets to talk to the cool folks who make some of your favorite films.

Available today in rental and retail stores:

House of the Devil (Dark Sky): Review coming soon.

Zombieland (Sony): Review coming soon.

Planet Hulk (Lionsgate): The latest Marvel Animation release finds the Incredible Hulk being banished from Earth and jettisoned into outer space. Luckily, his ship crash lands on a planet filled with conflict where Hulk can put his smash to good work.

More than a Game (IFC): NBA superstar LeBron James’ high school team is chronicled in this rousing sports documentary.

Universal Solider: Regeneration (Sony): Review coming soon.

Ong Bak 2: The Beginning (Magnolia): The prequel/sequel to Tony Jaa’s cult-favorite martial arts opus finds Jaa once again dazzling by doing all of his own fighting, stunts, everything. He’s pretty much impossible not to watch. The filmmakers wisely keep the dialogue to a minimum and the action at full-crank. Fans of the first won’t be disappointed.

High-Definition Re-Issues:

Ong-Bak - The Thai Warrior (Fox): See above. The 2005 epic that introduced Jaa to the world.

Walk the Line (Fox): The Man in Black’s life story inspires a brooding performance from Joaquin Phoenix and an Oscar-winning turn from Reese Witherspoon.

The Last King of Scotland (Fox): Forest Whitaker took home Oscar gold for his portrayal of Idi Amin.

To Live and Die in LA (Fox): Or, the movie that Wang Chung provided the score and soundtrack for. This 1980s potboiler stars William Petersen in his pre-CSI days as a gritty cop trying to stop a murderous counterfeiter.

New releases last week, Jan. 26, 2010:

Saw VI (Lionsgate): Review coming soon.

Surrogates (Disney): Review coming soon.

Whip It (Fox): A solid, entertaining directorial debut from Drew Barrymore that uses roller derby to examine a host of issues from relationships to self-confidence to inter-family strife. Ellen Page is awesome in the title role as Babe Ruthless, and the supporting case, particularly Kristen Wiig, add depth and star power to this independent gem. A definite rental!

Alone in the Dark II (Vivendi): The follow-up no one asked for to Uwe Boll’s 2005 craptasterpiece. Gone is Tara Reid and Christian Slater, in are Rick Yune and Natassia Malthe. Also gone is Boll, but he’s been replaced by the directing duo Michael Roesch and Peter Scheerer. Two heads, sadly, don’t make up for one and “Alone in the Dark II” is woefully bad.

InAlienable (Anchor Bay): Walter Koenig wrote this sci-fi tale of a man grieving the loss of his family who discovers his body is host to an alien parasite.

Pontypool (IFC): Review coming soon.

Michael Jackson’s This is It (Sony): The posthumous concert rehearsal footage that became a movie quicker than you could spit once the King of Pop died last year. The Blu-Ray release comes with a CD of Michael Jackson’s most well-known tracks. This is strictly for fans.

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell (Fox): This thinly-veiled comedy is one of the most misogynistic movies you’re likely to find. The scathingly caustic view of women paraded past by two of the three leads grows tiresome immediately, yet it continues, unabated, for most of the film’s running time. Yes, there are boobs aplenty on display. But I couldn’t even bring myself to enjoy them. Whatever message they were trying to convey here was completely lost on me.
