Oxford American, “The Southern Magazine of Good Writing” as it bills itself, has won awards and praise for its lively devotino to literature. Its 11th annual Music Issue is on the newsstands now, and it’s well worth the heft $10.99 price tag.
The magazine features contributions on the music and musicians of the South, some well known but most less so and some total obscurities. Ever heard of The Feminine Complex, a female pop-rock quintet from Arkansas, lately championed by Unrest/Air Miami front man Mark Robinson? Didn’t think so.
Best of all, the Music Issue comes with a two-CD set containing 53 songs by the artists covered in the magazine. It’s a musical education of the most enjoyable sort.
