John Allman

If you’ve ever wandered the aisles at the video store or surfed the DVR pay-per-view options and seen a bunch of movies that you’ve never heard of, chances are John has watched them. Why? He loves movies. All kinds of movies. Good, bad, so-bad-they’re good, even the truly unwatchable ones. He mostly loves horror and science-fiction and drive-in exploitation movies that most upstanding model citizens wouldn’t dare watch. Then he writes up his thoughts so you can decide - watch, don’t watch or avoid at all costs. Sometimes he even gets to talk to the cool folks who make some of your favorite films.

The Lowdown: How did this movie only make $17 million at the box office, less than “Fighting,” “Fame,” or even the insufferable “Inkheart”?

“Jennifer’s Body” is an example of what’s wrong with the multiplex these days.

Horror fans whine and complain about the lack of quality, gory, fun fright flicks to lure them out and then they all but ignore one of the year’s most surprising offerings.

Yes, I know, the advertising leaned way too heavy on Megan Fox (but can you blame them?) and implied that this was some unholy union between “Heathers” and “The Faculty.”

It’s not.

“Jennifer’s Body” is a rowdy, snarky, kick-butt demon possession story that just happens to incorporate all the subversive social commentary of high school life, a la “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” or “Heathers,” while still delivering a bloody good time.

Diablo Cody, so revered for “Juno,” offers up a crisp, cut-throat screenplay that includes satan-worshipping emo rockers, teen-age hormones on high and a devilishly good demonic plot.

Fox actually proves to be entirely capable of doing more than just looking hot or avoiding giant robot cars. She’s pure sex appeal with an edge. But it’s Amanda Seyfried who gives the killer performance, mixing just the right amount of Uma Thurman’s The Bride with Winona Ryder’s conflicted Veronica.

Do this movie a favor, and go out and buy it. Make it a cult hit and throw a middle finger to the other, less-deserving, more-successful studio films that sucked money out of your wallet without giving back anything in return.

The Stuff You Care About:
Hot chicks – Megan Fox, evil, hot and delicious.
Nudity – Implied.
Gore – Considerable.
Drug use – No.
Bad Guys/Killers – Satan-worshipping emo rockers.
Buy/Rent – Buy it.
Release Date – Dec. 29, 2009
