Perhaps you noticed I haven’t blogged in the last couple of days. That’s because I’m ridiculously sick. Apparently I picked up some evil West Coast strain of the flu, probably from a joystick or controller (isn’t the irony excruciating?), and I can barely get out of bed. That didn’t stop me yesterday from visiting with Capcom, where I got some hands-on time with 2-D fighter “Street Fighter IV” (fans of the series will love it), and a demo of “Bionic Commando,” which also looked fun.
After that I trucked over to the Presidio to hang out at LucasArts HQ, where they showed us demos of “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed” (potentially awesome, but there’s still a lot of work to do), “Fracture” (I think the terrain-altering weapons will make for some really fun and creative multiplayer matches) and “LEGO Indiana Jones,” which looks like it’ll be another “guilty pleasure” in the vein of the other LEGO games.
Then we went over to a party being hosted by Electronic Arts, which featured an address by Will Wright. Unfortunately, the crowd was so loud we could barely hear what Will had to say from our lousy perch on the nightclub’s balcony. All I remember is that he drew parallels between the cast of “Gilligan’s Island” and the Endless characters from Neil Gaiman’s “Sandman.” In retrospect, it seems obvious, but it had never occured to me before—or probably to anyone else except Will Wright. Once again, proving the man is on another level than the rest of us.
Anyway, after an hour or so at the EA party, my body finally started giving me signs that collapse was imminent. Fever. Chills. Incessant coughing. So we skipped the Sierra party and went home.
Today, I feel no better. Which is why I’m skipping sessions I’d planned with BioWare and Microsoft, along with the Video Games Live concert tonight. Hopefully I’m not missing anything too exciting. But whatever. I just can’t do it anymore.
I’m going to get in bed now, and if/when I emerge (tomorrow at the earliest), I’ll post any other updates. In the meantime, remember this: Video games made me sick. Be careful out there.
