Check out Red Bull Flugtag Team Tampa Baywatch unveil their “aircraft” Saturday at SoHo Tavern (corner of Howard and Platt).
In case you’re wondering, the official Flugtag (German for “flying day") jumps off July 19. The event takes place near the Tampa Bay Convention Center and some 40 teams have signed up to fly their homemade air crafts.
Teams of up to five people build a craft using any design they like. The only rule is that the plane can be no wider than 30 feet and weigh no more than 450 pounds (including the pilot). Team members will push the plane off a 30-foot high pier at the mouth of the Hillsborough River while another will attempt to pilot it out over the water.
Red Bull has been sponsoring the flying competitions since 2002 in places like Austin, Los Angeles, New York City, Miami and Nashville, Tenn. Tampa is the first stop of 2008, with events also planned in Portland, Ore. and Chicago.
Check out next week’s Friday Extra and TBO.com for more deets about the big day.
