The 23-player ballot of candidates for 2009 induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame has been released, with Rickey Henderson leading the newcomers.
While baseball’s all-time leader in runs and stolen bases is a lock for the Hall, the candidacies of others eligible for election for the first time in 2009 are dubious. Among the group is Greg Vaughn, who played for the Rays from 2000-02. The other first-timers are David Cone, Jesse Orosco, Dan Plesac, Ron Gant, Mo Vaughn, Mark Grace, Matt Williams and Jay Bell.
Holdovers who haven’t made the cut in the past are Jim Rice (in his final year of eligibility for election by the BBWAA), Harold Baines, Bert Blyleven, Andre Dawson, Tommy John, Don Mattingly, Mark McGwire, Jack Morris, Dale Murphy, Dave Parker, Tim Raines, Lee Smith and Alan Trammell.
Ballots were mailed to nearly 600 voters (before you ask, I’m not one of them) and are due Dec. 31. Results will be announced Jan. 12.
