OK. Maybe not forever.
Electronic Arts announced today an extension of its exclusive licensing relationships with the National Football League and NFL Players Association to retain exclusivity in their “Madden” games through 2013 — that’s another five years.
While this deal makes plenty of financial sense for parties involved (the NFL gets a lot of cash and EA keeps its choke-hold on the franchise), it leaves the competition-loving old-school capitalist in all of us further saddened.
“Madden’s” luster has dimmed in recent years in the franchise’s migration to next-generation consoles, with new ideas failing to inspire. Many fans have jumped ship.
The last “other NFL videogame,” NFL 2K5, actually outsold its Madden competitor, and was by all rights a more fun game to play, before EA pulled a Microsoft and made this a one-horse race for all eternity.
