If you’ve ever wandered the aisles at the video store or surfed the DVR pay-per-view options and seen a bunch of movies that you’ve never heard of, chances are John has watched them. Why? He loves movies. All kinds of movies. Good, bad, so-bad-they’re good, even the truly unwatchable ones. He mostly loves horror and science-fiction and drive-in exploitation movies that most upstanding model citizens wouldn’t dare watch. Then he writes up his thoughts so you can decide - watch, don’t watch or avoid at all costs. Sometimes he even gets to talk to the cool folks who make some of your favorite films.

The Lowdown: Has it really been 10 years since Tyler Durden changed the way that most guys now in their late 30s looked at the world, their lives and the movies that define us?
When “Fight Club” was released in 1999, it was an anomaly, an instant cult classic that many people simply didn’t understand. The mass populous couldn’t comprehend Chuck Palahniuk’s scathing indictment of male servitude and the graphic, brutal way in which his Narrator and the members of Project Mayhem channeled their aggression and rage.
I saw it two times on opening weekend, and four times in the theater total. I’ve watched it countless times since.
This is “the” movie, as far as myself and many people like me are concerned. No other film has ever tapped into the doubt, self-loathing, anxiety and desire to change that marks so many men.
More than that, “Fight Club” signaled a sea change in the way that movies were made as director David Fincher’s camera burrowed into the subconscious and proudly thrust an unapologetic middle finger to the blind sheep mainstream.
Who hasn’t wanted to beat the living crap out of themselves in their boss’s office just to see the look of abject horror as that boss had to witness a put-upon office drone retaliate and rail against the daily injustice that so many of us are forced to endure?
The stunning high-definition transfer finally arrives on Blu-Ray with a deliciously wicked new addition – a faux main menu for a movie that is the absolute 180-degree opposite of “Fight Club.” If you don’t know, I won’t spoil it, but this small gift from Fincher to the fans, specifically included for the Blu-Ray release, shows that he and the powers behind the film still recognize and appreciate the lasting impact their movie has made.
