Blind Man’s Colour’s dream-pop comes true

A little Kanye West can go a long way, which, depending on your perspective can be a good or bad thing.

For St. Petersburg electronic duo Blind Man’s Colour, that’s definitely a good thing.

In January, West posted a track by Blind Man’s Colour, “Jimmy Dove,” on his Web site. Things started happening. Fast.

“One day we’re just another band in college, the next day Kanye West posts a song of ours, the day after that we get e-mails from record labels,” says Kyle Wyss, who began making music with Orhan Chettri in middle school.

Heady stuff for a pair of 19-year-old college students (Wyss attends Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, while Chettri goes to New College in Sarasota.

“It’s something to adjust to,” Wyss says. “We want to make sure we don’t go too fast and ruin it. We’re staying in college and trying to get our degrees.”

Not too fast but not too slow, either. They’ve signed with Brooklyn’s Kanine Records (Grizzly Bear, Chairlift, Mommy and Daddy), which will release their debut album, “Season Dreaming,” on Aug. 18.

They also are gearing up for some of their first live performances, beginning tonight at New World Brewery in Ybor City.

“We’ve only played five shows, mostly at school, one at the beach,” Wyss says.

The two began in more orthodox rock band fashion, learning Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin tunes on guitar and drums.

Gradually, they turned on to more modern sounds.

“One of biggest influences was Flaming Lips’ “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots,”” Wyss says, “with the bubbly synths mixed with acoustic guitars. We wanted to bring those two different styles together.”

“Season Dreaming” does just that, with gurgling electronic effects suggesting an underwater reverie while an acoustic guitar is strummed insistently.

“A lot of songs sound extremely electronic but were written on acoustic guitar, then we go on the computer and manipulate sounds and add multiple layers to come up with a totally different result.

Blind Man’s Colour performs tonight (Friday, July 24, 2009) at New World Brewery, 1313 E. Eighth Ave. in Tampa. Viernes & Proud Iron Lion also are on the bill. Show time is 9 p.m. Admission is $6. Call (813) 248-4969.
