Web Site Shares Past Relationships

At a time when Internet dating is a popular way of meeting people, two New Tampa entrepreneurs are trying to help make the Internet a safer experience.
Jason Pren and Jerry Daniel became partners in the Web site http://www.talkingex.com in 2003.
At talkingex.com, people from across the globe are invited to post information about their former dating partners or spouses. Anyone who comes to the Web site can look up information about the person they are dating or are going to date and see if any of their exes have said anything about them.
“It is a Web site where anyone can come and share past relationships,” Pren said. “It is complimentary to other dating sites. We are trying to make it a safer place for daters. It is a free public site for everyone.”
In mid-October, the site will add a new interactive feature. If someone posts something about an ex-spouse or ex-lover, other people viewing the post will be able to ask the posting person questions about his or her former relationship.
“People can have an open dialogue with the ex-,” Daniel said. “If a person posts something about their ex-, we do the best we can to keep their information anonymous, but if someone is interested in their ex-, they can ask that person who posted about their ex-.”
Both Pren and Daniel have noticed there are places for people to do criminal background checks on people, but not character checks.
“A person’s ex- knows a lot about him or her,” Daniel said. “What if the person is prone to violence? The purpose of the site is not to bash or defame a person. It is to give a picture of what the person’s character is like.”
The site is free for searches and for posting profiles. Both Pren and Daniel pay for the site out of their own pocket.
“We want the site to remain free,” Daniel said. “Making money is not our main concern. Our main goal is go provide a service. This is a site for people who are dating and want to find out about a person.”
Even though many people might have nothing but bad things to say about an ex-, the site has positive and negative posts.
“The most common stories are he left me or she left me,” Pren said. “It works both ways, some people have no complaints about their ex-.”
Pren covers the marketing for the site, while Daniel updates the site.
“So far the reviews have been good,” Pren said. “I am getting the reaction I have been looking for. People want to tell their side of the story and this site provides an outlet for them.”
Even though both Pren and Daniel have never had bad experiences, they have heard others talk about theirs.
“We always noticed people are always talking about their exes,” Pren said. “We are working on getting profiles from around the world. Anybody who dates should use this Web site.”
