Fast cars, sexy women and exotic animals are the feature of Temple Terrace artist Frank Bolock’s newest exhibit.
Bolock is a member of the Artists Gallery Royale, a co-op gallery run by 50 artists in St. Petersburg. The gallery, at 200 Second Ave. N., will have an exhibit featuring Bolock’s artwork Oct. 14 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The exhibit will run through Nov. 10.
Bolock has been painting since the mid 1970s. He said it has been his experience the artwork featuring cars and women have always been big sellers, so when the Artists Gallery Royale decided to have an exhibit for his artwork he decided to make the theme Beauty and the Machine.
In addition to his Beauty and the Machine artwork, Bolock will also have a display of some of his other work
Bolock said most of his artwork is inspired by real life.
“I get material from libraries and from my file of pictures,†Bolock said. “I don’t copy pictures verbatim, but a majority of my artwork is inspired by photographs. I use real world objects.â€
In addition to working on artwork in his Temple Terrace home, Bolock also teaches watercolor classes at the Life Enrichment Center, 9704 N. Boulevard, and is the director of exhibits for the Tampa Realistic Artists at Old Hyde Park Art Center, 705 Swann Ave.
Ronna Metcalf is the executive director of the Life Enrichment Center. She said having Bolock as a teacher is wonderful.
“He is an artist of the highest caliber,†Metcalf said. “He is very versatile. He teaches watercolor and is also exceptional in acrylics. We have enjoyed having him teach at the center for about three years and we hope he will be with us for a long time.â€
Bolock has always been able to draw and he started out as a comic strip artist. He became a full-time artist in 1997 and he’s lived in Temple Terrace since 2004.
He has been influenced the most by Salvador Dali, Edward Hopper, Edgar Degas and Norman Rockwell.
Much of his artwork tells a story. Many of the backgrounds are real places with his fictional characters.
In one piece titled, “Last Cup Coffeehouse,†for which he won second place in the Strawberry Festival art show n 2002, features a real coffeehouse with Einstein, Jesus and Socrates sipping lattes at a table while the Angel of Death walks by with his coffee.
“I see things that inspire me everywhere,†Bolock said. “I also paint real places, animals and people. I will have some traditional stuff for sale along with the other works.â€
Bolock will also be showing off his quick sketch talents at Old Hyde Park Art Gallery Oct. 12 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. He will do at least five quick sketch portraits in watercolor and he will try to teach how to make a quick likeness of a person using watercolors in under 10 minutes.
