Still, there’s more for the team to celebrate as they finish off the final three weeks of the season. The Crusaders have never posted such a good winning record.
Despite that, head coach Roger Duncan remains ever cautious coming off a 56-53 loss to Florida Christian of Fort Meyers last Saturday.
With two key starters injured, and a week’s layoff due to school religious reasons, Duncan said the team just played flat.
“We definitely should have won that game,” he said.
Seniors David Norwood did not play due to a cyst and Sam Moorer saw limited action because of a separated shoulder. Moorer asked to enter the game in the last two minutes when the Crusaders were down by four, but was unable to capitalize for a win.
Moorer’s shoulder has separated four times in the last two years. He is expected to undergo surgery in March.
“If we can get healthy, we can make a run. I think we have a great chance,” Duncan said optimistically. “Our only losses are to 1A schools. This loss will get their (the players) attention.”
Jan. 13, Seffner beat a tough rival in St. Pete Catholic 53-42. Their next opponent is Sonrise Christian from Lakeland tomorrow followed by Cambridge Friday for Homecoming. Indian Rocks Christian follows on Monday.
“Sonrise is very good and will be a very tough team,” Duncan said. “And Cambridge, anytime you play a district rival can always be a challenge.”
Jan. 30, Lakeland Christian gets a rematch with Seffner. The Crusaders beat Lakeland in the title game of the Indian Rocks Christian tournament during Christmas break.
Seffner wraps up its season Feb. 2 at Northside Christian, and then hosts the district tournament Feb. 6 and Feb. 9-10.
As for Seffner’s ranking, “It’s a nice honor, but we don’t give it a lot of credence,” Duncan added.
