TAMPA - A motions hearing in the case between Cory Lake Isles homeowners and their property owners association was delayed Tuesday when Judge Frank Gomez revealed he may have a potential conflict. More than a dozen residents from the New Tampa community waited in a hallway at the Hillsborough County Courthouse while lawyers from both sides met with Gomez in his chambers. The judge said he has a “good friend” who lives in Cory Lake Isles, and he wanted both sides to consult with their clients before allowing the case to proceed.
“He wants us to let him know whether we want him to recuse himself,” said Philip Friedman, who represents the association.
Friedman has asked the judge to refer the case to binding arbitration. Mark Basurto, who represents the seven homeowners who are suing for access to financial records, has asked the court to compel developer Gene Thomason to turn over more documents.
